20th Century Historical Fiction/Romance & The Italian Family Series

A Life By Design is a 20th century historical fiction novel that is based on romance and drama. It is also a coming of age story due to its span over several years while the main character, Elena is studying to become a fashion designer.
The thread throughout the story involves romance or the love interest with a shop owner in Milan. Its essence is romance, tied in with the history and dramatic or suspenseful aspects that involves an unknown villain.
The story is set in the 1970s so it is not an ancient history novel, but spans the time of a liberated movement and purest of fashion in Italy.

A Life By Design is slightly different to my other three stories in The Italian Family Series. The first book I wrote (a novella), is entitled A New Life and is also historical and romantic. However, it focuses on an embellishment of my parents’ marriage when migrating from Italy to Melbourne. I added drama and action within the story but it  was inspired by my parents. The second book I wrote is entitled, The Beauty of Tears and is also further back into history with some romance threaded throughout the story. This story was inspired by my father’s childhood experiences, but have also been embellished to create a fictionalised, dramatic and suspenseful story. The third book I wrote is entitled Dancing in the Rain and is also historical with a romantic flavour to it. This story was inspired by my mother’s childhood experiences, but has been exaggerated to create conflict, suspense, romance, and drama. Finally, A Life By Design has no relevance to my parents but was born out of my need to be creative and adventurous in an exciting city (with Milan being the fashion capital of the world). The main character , Elena is Valeria’s sister (Valeria is the main character from Dancing in the Rain) and I thought it would be great to share her journey with the readers.

The genre of historical fiction/romance/coming of age, may appeal to some readers but not others. If you enjoy a bit of history, the aesthetic appeal of Italy, romance, drama, coming of age narrative, and suspense, you’ll enjoy A Life By Design and my other stories from The Italian Family Series.

May you live a life filled with creativity, aesthetics, and love.

  1. I like the stalker element in books and I haven't read many stories where the heroine was studying to be a fashion designer.
