Excerpt

“…‘Mary isn’t even up yet,’ I reply sharply, enraged that he is continuing to be unpleasant. I don’t kiss him good morning, nor do I check if he’s slept. I don’t ask if he enjoyed his party or tell him how much I want to marry him.

‘Fetch her then.’ His tone softens, but I still hear agitation. ‘Billy, are you going to be ready to leave at ten?’

‘I am not going on holiday,’ I reply. ‘Jessie and her daughter are staying right here. They are not leaving Fox Halt Farm. I’m not either.’ I feel tense too, unaccustomed to Richard disagreeing with me. He always lets me have my own way. I want to make him realise how important it is to me that Jessie is here. I felt too, that my former best friend was just beginning to open up to me.

‘They need me. They are staying,’ I tell him, taking it for granted that Richard will accept my demand.

He flinches and looks away. Suddenly, I feel guilty about how much we have been looking forward to our holiday; precious time together in the place where we first met twenty-two years ago.

‘What’s going on, Jessie?’ he asks. Richard is sitting directly opposite her and I watch as he leans forward to stare into her eyes.

‘Why don’t you want us here?’ Jessie replies quickly, seeming to ignore his posturing.

I don’t want him to tell her the truth. ‘Richard thinks this is one of the first places Michael will come looking for you,’ I say. ‘He doesn’t think Fox Halt Farm is the best hide-out.’

‘Yes,’ Richard agrees, ‘Think of somewhere else to go, Jessie. Somewhere your husband doesn’t know about. The taxi can take you anywhere you like, I’ll pay, and I’ll pay for somewhere nice for you to stay. Stay there as long as you like, but you have to go.’ He doesn’t take his eyes off Jessie. ‘Billy, please get Mary.’

‘Alright,’ I say, deciding that it is exhaustion, and how upset Richard is about me not going on holiday that is making him so hostile. I find Mary at the bottom of the stairs. She grabs my hand.

‘Don’t let Mum take me back. I never want to be at Culmfield again.’ Her voice cracks and I feel like the auntie I used to be…”
