Context: Lorna and Tristan have just finished discussing some tough subjects about their future and share a moment of comfort in each other.

Tristan gave me a squeeze but didn’t say anything. I stared at the window where I watched Tristan for weeks last year, wondering what his story might be. Who was the eccentric man next door with rocks in his yard? He was my husband. He was still a mystery, a closed book, an enigma, but I loved him.
The sun lowered in the sky, the light growing dimmer as it filtered into the room. My messy paintings hung on the walls, surrounding us. I’d named them after my family, including Tristan. In an odd way, my family was watching over me. My gaze hovered on the painting named after my brother.
So many unresolved issues, so many unasked questions, so many layers of Tristan that needed to be peeled back for me to understand his whole story better—these thoughts swirled through my tired mind as I was lulled into slumber. I tucked them away for now. Peace won the battle in my head.
I remembered Edna Lowry’s wrinkled smile earlier that day, her aged eyes that had seen so much, known so much, yet she hadn’t allowed life’s troubles to swallow her blessings.
“Thank you,” I murmured.
“For what?” Tristan asked.
“For just being you.”
