When an evil force from the far reaches of the galaxy threatens Earth, the UltraSquad, a secret superhero team, with a mission to save the universe through teamwork, positivity, and justice, is enlisted to battle the overly smug villain. Along with their bizarro-cute extra-terrestrial sidekicks the Pallies, the kick-butt girls employ their magical ultra-superpowers to save the universe! This first book in a new graphic novel series inspires girls to reach for their dreams, work together, and make a difference.

Meet the Ultra Squad!
- Posey (Pink): She loves acting and has a passion for fashion, especially anything with sequins and glitter! Her motto is “Born to shine!”
- Anna (Turquoise): She is a gymnast who loves to stay active both through sports like lacrosse and rock wall climbing. Her motto is “Girls run the world...and the galaxy!”
- Lyric (Purple): She lives for music and her guitar and also loves writing poetry and volunteering at the dog shelter. Her motto is “Girls rock!”
- Sky (Green): She is super plugged into technology and loves science experiments (like slime!). Her motto is “Problem? Problem solved.”

My Review:

I haven't read a graphic novel in ages and was drawn to the Ultra Squad series primarily because of its Puerto Rican illustrator (WorldReads!). I admit that the tween age group is a little young for me by several decades, but I still loved reading this exciting story. Our four heroines are unexpectedly thrust into Superhero status with amazing outfits, but very little preparation and so must rely mainly on their innate talents to save the Universe while each one must also overcome a debilitating fear such as vertigo on the way. They are accompanied by their little alien sidekicks, the Pallies, who are absolutely adorable - especially the hangry one!

I loved Ultra Squad's humour and its energy. Both the dialogue and colourful illustrations complement each other perfectly and ideas like the Pallies' camouflage onesies are just brilliant! There is a serious underlying message of what girls can achieve through self belief and teamwork, but this is allowed to influence the tale withouts its being hammered home so I never felt as though I was being preached at. Instead this is a fun and inspirational story. I'm delighted to have had this opportunity to read this first Ultra Squad graphic novel and am intrigued to see what the girls will face in its sequel.

  1. I love this idea, and Eleanor is super into graphic novels. She has all the DC Super Hero Girls at Super Hero High books and graphic novels. I will look for this for her, thanks for sharing!

    1. I hope Eleanor enjoys Ultra Squad as much as I did! I've got the next in the series to read as well so will be blogging about that one probably mid-May

  2. This looks super cute. I'm glad you loved it, even though it was geared toward a tween audience---sounds like it would definitely appeal to that group too.

    1. I wish I'd had this kind of graphic novel around when I was the target age group. I liked the story now, but I'd have loved it way back then :-)

  3. This book is right up my daughter's alley. She is very into Superheros.

    1. I think she'd enjoy Ultra Squad then! Superhero stories to inspire girls :-)
