Book Description:
Kathleen Jones has lived a protected and typical suburban life, nothing unexpected in her carefully controlled and planned existence. She’s about to complete her college degree and is ready to start a successful career but after completing her last exam she comes home to find her world has been turned upside down. Her home has been torched and her parents and little brother killed.
If that’s not bad enough, she is kidnapped and drugged unconscious by strangers posing as a police officers. When she awakes she discovers that everything has changed – her face, her name, and everything she believed to be true.
But things get worse. Hardly recovered from surgery, she is whisked away under the cover of darkness as more men storm the clinic with guns. It seems that the men who abducted her are not her greatest threat. Now on a private charter on its way to Nice, France, her abductors are calling her Ruby – Ruby Draker!

I wasn't sure what to expect from Finding Ruby Draker, having not read any of Marianne Scott's writing before, so I was pleasantly surprised to find myself gripped by this novel. The story is told in the first person by an understandably bewildered Ruby / Kathleen who struggles to adapt to a totally different lifestyle in a house full of strangers who keep insisting they are her family now. The setup was such an intriguing premise that I had to keep on reading to find out how everything would resolve itself.
I liked Ruby as a person and could empathise with her uncertainty at trusting the people who, from her perspective, had abducted her from her home, burning down though it was. I think I might have been even more reticent than she was with them under the circumstances, glamorous Côte d'Azur villa notwithstanding, however it was great to follow such a well-drawn character development arc as naive suburbanite Kathleen transforms into jetsetting spy Ruby.
I did find the preponderance of 'R' names within the family a little irritating although I understood the justification for it. I did also need to suspend disbelief every once in a while, but I often find that to be the case with thrillers and this one never became too wildly outlandish! That said, Finding Ruby Draker is an exciting international thriller which was great fun to read. I am already looking forward to its sequel which I will be starting very soon.
