But her routine takes a turn for the horrifying when a giant sinkhole collapses the earth outside their house and reveals a skeleton.

Shocked to discover the bones belong to a former member of her sibling’s band, Lucy’s worst nightmare comes alive when police suspect her of the killing. And as she turns to her dying parent’s diaries in a desperate search for vindication, she’s entangled in a dark and complicated truth.

Will unearthing long-buried wrongs prove lethal?

Lies at Her Door is a heavy-hitting psychological thriller novel. If you like strong character growth, overcoming dysfunctional relationships, and revealing unexpected secrets, then you’ll love AA Abbott’s chilling whodunnit.

A PLACE IN THE WEST COUNTRY
by AA Abbott

The British city of Bristol is peaceful and laid back. In the English West Country, it’s been described as the graveyard of ambition. The temptation to enjoy a slow pace of life, to sit back and drink the local apple cider, is almost overwhelming. When I first made my home there, I enjoyed returning to tranquillity after spells working in buzzier places like London and Birmingham. (That’s the English Birmingham, our second city, rather than the Alabama version.)

You can have too much of a good thing, though. When England went into lockdown in 2020, I yearned to go somewhere, anywhere, other than the same familiar scenery. That sense of claustrophobia informed my latest suspense thriller, “Lies at Her Door”. The first of my books set wholly in Bristol – after all, for two years, I rarely went anywhere else – the story is about a young woman outside her comfort zone as soon as she leaves the house. Lucy Freeman lives in Clifton, a pretty and upmarket district. The snow-white terraces scream of money. Yet Lucy has little cash and even less self-esteem. Overshadowed by her older brother, she has been left behind while he travels the world with his rock band. Already thirty-two and still lodging with her parents, Lucy’s role is as a carer for her disabled mother. She has given up waiting for her life to happen.

The discovery of a skeleton changes everything. Murder is unusual in Bristol; a senior detective tells his lover than the homicide rate is one-third of London’s. The cops throw resources at the investigation, and soon the spotlight falls on Lucy. Not only is she awkward and evasive, but she’s one of the few people who had access to the cellar where the bones were found.
Worried for her own and her mother’s future, Lucy tries to calm herself by walking a neighbor’s dog on the Zig Zag path, a lane which plunges down a cliff to the River Avon below. Yet more danger lurks there than Lucy realizes…

Some writers treat the location of their books like an extra character. British mystery writers Ruth Rendell and Rachel McLean are especially good at this. It’s also the effect I wish to achieve in my stories. Tourists in the West Country usually focus on Bath, the beautiful setting for “Bridgerton”, rather than nearby Bristol. I hope “Lies at Her Door” will tempt a few travellers to make a detour.

Lies at Her Door is Helen’s ninth book. She’s had help from readers on subjects as varied as police procedure, philosophy and music. She’s grateful to them and to editor Katharine D’Souza for making huge improvements to the story.

She publishes her thrillers in a Large Print dyslexia-friendly edition as well as standard paperback and ebook versions. (You can also adjust the font on your electronic device to suit your needs.)

A member of the Alliance of Independent Authors, Helen likes speaking to book groups, business networks and social circles.
